Our position
For a paved 10 mile commute each way, or a shorter city commute you ride every workday, buy a non-folding commute-class bike if you have somewhere to park it. Use a folder only when the apartment or trunk forces the hinge. Run the fit selector with trip length set to medium or long before you open amazon.com.
What 10 miles actually costs the battery
Ten miles one way is twenty miles round trip, plus stops, a backpack, and wind. Brochure range assumes a light rider on flat ground in eco mode. Size the battery for the bad Friday, not the listing maximum. Hills on that route belong in the hills guide; a flat city loop does not.
City commute and work commute are the same job
Electric bike for city commute and electric bike for work commute searches want the same tool: lights for dusk, fenders for wet pavement, a rack, and Class 2 or Class 3 that your local paths allow. A daily commute bike you hate lifting up stairs is the wrong bike even if the motor is fine.
When a folder still wins a 10 mile ride
Only if you store it indoors or take it on a train and you can lift it. Ten miles of pavement on a 65 lb folding fat-tire is slower and harsher than a commute-class frame. If storage is a garage, do not buy the folder because a cheapest list ranked it first.
Start with the fit selector
Set commute distance to 3-8 miles or 8+ miles, hills honestly, and storage to garage or apartment. WattTrail Score should separate a city commute bike from an apartment folder. Then use the commute checklist for lights, fenders, and class before you check availability.

Before you buy
Questions people actually ask.
What electric bike is good for a 10 mile commute?
A non-folding commute-class bike (Aventon Level or Ride1Up 700 class) with battery headroom for a 20 mile round trip, lights, and fenders. Fold only if you must store it in an apartment.
Is 10 miles too far for an e-bike commute?
No, if the route is mostly paved and the battery is sized for the round trip plus hills and cold. It is too far to enjoy on a heavy folding fat-tire you also carry up stairs.
City commute or daily work commute: different bikes?
Same lane. Both want pavement geometry, lights, and a place to park. Cargo or a passenger is the exception: look at utility class instead.
