Our position
If most miles are paved bike lane or street, buy commute class. If most miles are gravel shoulders, canal paths, or broken chipseal, buy fat-tire. Use the fit selector hills + commute answers ? do not pick based on YouTube thumbnails.
What commute class gets right
Lower rotating weight, better geometry for street clothes, easier racks and fenders. WattTrail Score boosts these when storage is garage/shed and trips are medium or long.
What fat-tire class gets right
Grip and comfort on ugly surfaces. The trade is slower pavement and more weight. Score boosts fat-tire when hills/path demand is high or you explicitly need that platform.
Utility is a third lane
If you carry cargo or a passenger, neither a skinny commute bike nor a trail-oriented fat-tire is automatic. Utility/RadRunner-class exists for short-hop errands ? the fit selector will surface it when commute is short and storage allows a full-size bike.

Questions people actually ask.
Is a fat tire e-bike good for commuting?
Yes on rough routes. No as a default for clean pavement ? you pay in weight and drag every day.
How do I choose quickly?
Open the fit selector. Set commute distance and hills honestly. Then read the lane guide it returns.
